Device management
Keep firmware and app versions current, use only one trustworthy computer for sensitive actions, and name your devices so an unfamiliar one stands out. Remove paired Bluetooth devices you no longer use.
Self-custody companion · independent guide
There is no web login to remember. Ledger Live access happens inside the app you install and on the hardware device you hold: unlock the device, connect it, and confirm every action on its own screen. This page explains how that flow works, where the risks actually are, and the habits that keep self-custody calm.
How access works
"Logging in" to Ledger Live means opening software on your own computer or phone and proving you hold the device — not sending credentials to a server.
Download Ledger Live from the official vendor source only — the vendor's own website or verified app store listing. Bookmarked links and search ads are a common way people end up with a look-alike installer.
Launch the app and, if you set an app-level password lock, enter it locally. This protects the interface on a shared machine. It is not a web account, and it can never be reset by a stranger online.
Plug in by cable or pair over Bluetooth, then unlock the hardware wallet with its PIN on the device itself. Accounts, balances and history appear once the device answers — the app is a viewer, not a key holder.
The app drafts; the device decides. Read the amount and the destination address on the hardware screen and confirm there. If the two screens disagree, reject and start again.
Account & device security
Most losses in self-custody come from a fake page, a leaked phrase or a rushed approval — not from a broken wallet.
Keep firmware and app versions current, use only one trustworthy computer for sensitive actions, and name your devices so an unfamiliar one stands out. Remove paired Bluetooth devices you no longer use.
Choose your own node or explorer settings if you want fewer third parties seeing your addresses, avoid posting balances publicly, and remember that addresses are permanent — anything shared on-chain can be linked later.
Type the vendor's address yourself, never approve a transaction you did not start, and treat urgent "verify your wallet" messages as hostile. Slow verification is cheap; a stolen phrase is not.

Ledger Live is the companion application that lets you view balances, manage accounts and approve transactions for a hardware wallet. Understanding how access works — and how it does not — is one of the simplest ways to protect your crypto.
Ledger Live is desktop and mobile software you install, not an online account with a username and a password. Access is granted locally: you open the app, unlock it with the password you set, and connect your device. Nothing in that flow needs a browser page, an email address, or credentials typed into a website.
The 24-word phrase that restores your wallet should only ever be entered on the hardware device itself. No legitimate app, support agent or site will ask you for it. If a page requests those words, that page is trying to take your funds, however polished it looks.
The app shows a draft; the device shows the truth. Confirm that the amount and the destination address on the hardware screen match what you intended. If they differ, reject the request and investigate before trying again.
Keep firmware current, download software from official sources only, avoid approving anything you did not start, and store your recovery phrase somewhere private and durable. Self-custody rewards patience more than speed: the few extra seconds of verification are what keep your assets yours.
FAQ
It refers to opening the Ledger Live app and getting access to your accounts. That happens locally: launch the software, unlock it, and connect your hardware device. There is no remote account or session on a website.
No. You may set a password to lock the app on your own machine, which protects the interface from someone else using that computer. It is optional, stored locally, and unrelated to your crypto — your device PIN is what authorises actions.
Only during a restore, and only on the hardware device's own screen. Never type the words into the app, a browser, a chat window, a support conversation or a spreadsheet. Anyone asking for them is attempting theft.
Stop and reject the request. The hardware screen is authoritative. A mismatch usually means malicious software on the computer is altering what you see in the app — investigate before signing anything else.
Install updates only through the app, keep your phrase offline and private, verify on the device every time, and know how you would restore access if the device were lost. Those four habits cover most real-world risk.
Re-run the checklist whenever you update firmware, add a device or change how you store your recovery phrase.
